On the fourth day of our journey, we venture off the beaten path to discover a hidden sanctuary nestled near the ancient site of Sacsayhuamán. Among towering stones, countless niches and altars are carved into the rock, offering a glimpse into a rich tapestry of Incan history and sacred rituals.

As we wander through this fascinating terrain, two monumental rock formations rise above the rest: Amaru Marcahuasi and the enigmatic X-Zone. These sacred sites once served as powerful portals for initiates along the Oracle Route of the Incas, where they journeyed into the Underworld for profound shamanic rites. Within these rocky outcrops lie hidden caves, believed to be the thresholds between worlds.

The Temple of the Moon – Amaru Marcahuasi

Our journey begins with a visit to one of the most enigmatic sites in the Andean highlands—the majestic rock outcropping known as Amaru Marcahuasi, or "The Temple of Amaru." Today referred to as the Temple of the Moon, this sacred site holds deep spiritual significance, its name invoking the Amaru—the sacred serpent, revered as a powerful guardian of the Underworld.

Rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape, this mysterious Huaca (sacred place) is adorned with intricate carvings, altars, and ancient steps, all etched into the very bedrock. As we explore, we’ll encounter representations of three of the most important deities in Andean cosmology—the serpent, the puma, and the condor—each symbolizing one of the three worlds: the underworld, the earthly realm, and the sky. These sacred animals were believed to guide initiates on their spiritual journeys, navigating the realms of existence and connecting them with cosmic forces.

At the heart of this ancient temple lies a hidden treasure — a perfectly circular altar, meticulously carved into the rock, nestled within a cave that whispers the secrets of the past. Beneath our feet, remnants of ancient Inca structures hint at the complex rituals that once took place here.

From the awe-inspiring vantage point atop the rock, you'll gaze down upon the sweeping views of the valley below, while our expert guide, Karupureq, shares the fascinating history of the site. You’ll learn about the Inca ceremonies that took place inside, atop, and beneath this sacred temple, dedicated to the cosmic serpent and its guardianship over the Underworld.

After exploring the summit, we’ll descend and continue our exploration of the surrounding area, where other mysterious sculpted stones await. From a stone that resembles a majestic condor to an intricately carved temple featuring monkeys, chakanas (Andean crosses), niches, and countless other surprises, each discovery offers a glimpse into the mystical world of the ancient Incas.
